2014 North-South Volleyball All-Stars, Coaches Named

Twenty-four outstanding junior volleyball players from across the state have been named to the North-South squads for the 18th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition in Montgomery July 20-25, according to an announcement by Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
The two teams will square off Thursday, July 24, at Faulkner University at 4 p.m.
All-Star Sports Week, which also includes in-state all-star games in soccer, baseball, girls and boys basketball, softball and football, will also feature the Summer Conference with clinics and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleading coaches and officials.
Also, an All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week.
Among the conference highlights will be the Sportsmanship Luncheon honoring all schools that have not had an ejection or fine during the 2013-14 school year and the Championship Coaches Awards Banquet that includes the naming of the 2013-14 Making A Difference Coaches of the Year, both on July 25.
Concluding the week will be the Officials Awards Banquet July 26 at noon.
Coaching the North All-Stars will be April Marsh of Bob Jones and Ronald Smith of Brewer. Administrative coach is Sue Marshall of Randolph. South coaches are Perry Robinson of Pelham and Carolyn Houston of Baker. Amy Rachel of Eclectic Middle School is the South administrative coach.
Marsh led Bob Jones to a 46-12 record and the Class 6A state championship last season while Smith guided Brewer (50-8) to a Class 5A state runner-up finish. Houston and Robinson coached Baker (39-16) and Pelham (17-28), respectively, to the Elite Eight state tournament.
Among the selections to the South squad is outside hitter Jillian Tinglin, who was Class 2A state tournament MVP for Class 2A state champion Montgomery Academy. Middle hitter Morgan Eiland and defensive specialist Ali Southerland helped St. Paul’s win the 5A state title and Emma Cary of Providence Christian sparked her team to a runner-up finish in Class 2A in 2013 after two straight state championships in 2011 and 2012.
Anchoring the North team are four players who earned All-State Tournament honors while helping their teams win state titles. Setter Erin Shockey and outside hitter Jeneva Salter led Bob Jones to its 6A championship, middle blocker Jessy Taylor helped Addison win the 1A state title, and outside hitter Blessing Dunn of Jacksonville was an all-tourney selection in the Golden Eagles’ Class 4A state title run.
The AHSADCA operates under the auspices of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Membership includes coaches of all AHSAA sports as well as administrators of member schools.
