AHSAA’s 16th All-Star Sports Week, Summer
Conference Rolls Into Montgomery July 9-13
The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 16th Annual All-Star Sports Week and Summer Conference begins Monday with the all-star baseball game at Paterson Field. The baseball doubleheader, which begins at 4 p.m., is the first of eight all-star contests slated for the week.
The week-long event, which expects some 4,000 teachers, coaches and administrators to attend, includes a Coaches School hosted by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
Baseball all-stars report Sunday as will football all-stars who will play the 54th annual North-South Classic Thursday night at Cramton Bowl to conclude the week-long competition. Tuesday’s action will include a softball doubleheader at Lagoon Park beginning at 6 p.m., and the girls and boys soccer contests at Emory Folmar YMCA Soccer Complex near AUM. The soccer contests will be the first played in the new soccer stadium constructed at the Folmar Complex. The girls play at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 8.
Girls and boys basketball competition is scheduled for Alabama State University’s Dunn-Oliver Acadome Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. The volleyball contest will be at Faulkner University Thursday at 4 p.m.
All-Star Sports Week will conclude Friday night at 6:30 with the Championship Coaches Banquet at the Renaissance. The banquet will also be highlighted by the presentation of the Making A Difference Awards, which are presented to six individuals – one from each of the six AHSAA classifications – for their outstanding contributions to the AHSAA’s education-based athletic mission.
This year’s recipients include Renard Davis, McIntosh High School (1A); John Smith, Hatton High School (2A); Frances Shipp, Weaver High School (3A); Richard Robertson, Andalusia High School (4A); Janet Latham, Athens High School (5A); and Peter Braasch, Vestavia Hills High School (6A).
Ten schools will also receive a Dr. Lawrence Lemak need-based $2,500 grant. The schools were selected from more than 50 applications by a special committee. The $25,000 awarded this year brings the total to $130,000 awarded since 2008 through the Lemak Award, named in honor of AHSAA Medical Advisory Board member Dr. Lawrence Lemak. The 2012 recipients include Addison, A.L. Johnson, Brantley, Central Coosa, Chilton County, Enterprise, Fruitdale, Hatton, Notasulga and Slocomb high schools.
The fifth annual Sportsmanship Luncheon, honoring 97 schools that were fine and ejection free during the 2011-12 school year, will be held Friday at noon at the Renaissance. Eight of the schools, one from each AHSAA district, have also been selected to receive al.com $1,000 grants, including Bayside Academy (District 1); Opp (District 2); Akron (District 3); Central Coosa (District 4); Parker (District 5); Spring Garden (District 6); Hackleburg (District 7); and Clements (District 8).
Among this year’s featured clinicians for the Coaching School are Alabama head football coach Nick Saban and Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik. Both head football coaches will speak on Wednesday at the Football Coaches School. Other keynote speakers include new UAB men’s basketball coach Jerod Haase; new Auburn women’s basketball coach Terri Williams-Flournoy; Vanderbilt head football coach James Franklin; new UAB head football coach Garrick McGee; and North Carolina head football coach Larry Fedora.
