AHSAA Mourns Death Of Former Birmingham AD 

The Alabama High School Athletic Association is mourning the death of longtime Birmingham City Schools athletic administrator Arthur “Pete” Wilkins, who passed away July 10 following health problems.
      Wilkins, a native of Brundidge, was a
Bessemer resident and graduate of Westfield High School. He Pete earned his undergraduate degree from Miles College where he was a three-sport letterman in baseball, basketball and football. He completed graduate degrees at the University of Montevallo.
     The longtime high school teacher and coach served as a football, basketball, baseball and track coach with Jefferson County Schools, starting at Woodward Junior High then Westfield High prior to becoming basketball coach at Miles College.
     He then joined the Birmingham City Schools athletic department where he eventually became the system’s athletic director. During his tenure the city schools had some of  their finest athletic moments including one of his passions, girls' athletics.
     Wilkins was a charter member of Miles College Sports Hall of Fame, member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served as a contest official with the AHSAA and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
      Following his retirement from the Birmingham City Schools, he served as interim athletic director with Bessemer Board of Education. Because of his dedication as an Alabama Special Olympics organizer, Bessemer City Schools named their Special Olympics in his honor.
      He is survived by his wife Dorothy and sons Roderick and Michaelangelo (Katrina) Wilkins, Sr., and one daughter,  Diane Johnson Hall.
      A memorial mass is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic  Church with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 13, at Johnson Memorial Funeral Home in Bessemer.
