AHSAA Mourns Death Of Coach/Official

The AHSAA is saddened to learn of the death of Billy Henderson of Tuscaloosa, a 1994 inductee into the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Henderson died Sunday morning at the age of 89.
He coached at Tuscaloosa High School (THS) for more than two decades and served the AHSAA as a football, basketball and baseball official for more than 50 years. Mr. Henderson, who also served as a Southeastern Conference basketball and football official for more than three decades, was honored in 2012 by the Druid City Baseball Umpires Association by naming its Excellence Award the Henderson-Griffin Award. The award is also named in honor of Mike Griffin.
A graduate of THS, he coached his alma mater to the 1955 state basketball title and coached the school’s 1964 football team to an 9-1 season, earning the state championship awarded by the Birmingham Post-Herald. That squad gave up only 34 points and posted seven shutouts.

He served as a coach in the North-South All-Star game. Mr. Henderson also was a University of Alabama graduate.
