McGill-Toolen’s Stokes Takes Decathlon Championship

        HOOVER – Senior Cameron Stokes of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School was the picture of consistency Tuesday scoring 5,538 points to take the 2013 AHSAA Decathlon championship.
        Stokes had a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, was sixth in the discus, seventh in the pole vault and javelin and was 12th in the 1,500 meters to hold off all challengers on the second day of competition.
        Vestavia Hills junior Joseph Lee was second with 5,330 points. He placed second in the pole vault with a leap of 13-05.25 and second in the javelin with a throw of 172-04. Auburn senior Sam Hardin was third with 5,219 points. He set a new decathlon record with a javelin throw of 196-04 and also won the discus with a 128-07 throw.
        First-day leader Timothis Williams of Lee-Huntsville (5,055 points) was fourth and Sparkman’s Ben Dailey (4,906) was fifth.
        Chris Thrasher of Vestavia Hills and Wes Toner of Hoover tied for first in the pole vault with winning leaps of 13-11.25. McGill-Toolen’s Cameron Ellis won the 1,500 meters and Mountain Brook’s Andy O’Shields took the 110-meter hurdles.
