2008 Soccer Semifinals, Finals Summaries



CLASS 6A BOYS FINALS

Oak Mountain 3, Prattville 2

          The Eagles got the game-winning goal with 26:58 remaining when Andres Aristazabal kicked the ball past the Lions' keeper. Miah Jones scored the first goal for Oak Mountain. Mason Lavallet got the second goal for the Eagles.


CLASS 6A GIRLS FINALS

Mountain Brook 5, Auburn 1

Auburn (13-5-3) took a 1-0 lead early on when Mary Katherine Reeves scored the game’s first goal. Third-ranked Mountain Brook (23-0-3) tied the game with 8:30 left in the half when MVP Bonnie Lepley scored the first of two goals.

Mary Morgan Weed, Lepley, Anna Meisler and Margaret Page notched one goal each in the second half.

 

CLASS 5A BOYS FINALS

John Carroll 3, Briarwood 2

          Zac Campbell's header from 22 yards out tied the 5A boys soccer finals at 2-2 with 19:30 remaining and John Eppenger's goal four minutes later was the game winner. Campbell scored the Cavs' first goal in the first half'

          Alex Faulk scored Briarwood's first goal and Will Pugh got the last one.


CLASS 5A GIRLS FINALS

Decatur 3, Briarwood Christian 2 (Shootout)

Decatur (21-6-5) stormed from behind with a game-tying goal with 2:23 to go in the second half and then won the school’s first 5A state title in two overtimes.

Kim Collins scored the game winner in the shootout.

Briarwood (15-5-2)  took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half when Elizabeth Reiser scored. Taylor Rutherford then tied the game at 1-1 for Decatur 27 minutes later. With 4:47 left, Lauren Silvio put the Lions ahead again 2-1 with a super move to the goal past two defenders. Rutherford tied the game again wih 2:23 left when she kicked in a goal when the ball was blocked on a previous shot just outside the net.

Neither team could score in overtime.

MVP was Sally Adams.

           

CLASS 1A-4A GIRLS FINALS

Guntersville 3, Indian Springs 0

            The top-ranked Wildcats (18-1-1) got all three goals from Carlye Bice in the first half to seal the championship win.

            Goalkeeper Lindsey Gillen had six saves for Guntersville, and Sonney Poner had five for fourth-ranked Indian Springs (15-8-1).

 

CLASS 1A-4A BOYS FINALS

Indian Springs 3, Randolph 1

            Four-ranked Indian Springs (22-6-1) scored three quick goals and fended off third-ranked Randolph (18-5-0) to notch the school’s first-ever AHSAA boys Class 1A-4A state soccer title.

MVP Alex Jamroz got the first goal for Indian Springs just seven minutes into the match. Thomas Fox and David Pique got the final two goals.

Alex Clay scored Randolph’s goal with 8:31 left in the first half. Neither team scored in the second half.

 

CLASS 6A BOYS SEMI-FINALS

Oak Mountain 3, Spain Park 2 (2 OT, shootout)

            The Eagles and Jaguars, located just five miles apart in Shelby County, played 90 minutes of soccer Friday night and then remained tied after one shootout.

            Oak Mountain finally clinched the berth in the Class 6A state finals when Andres Aristazabal kicked his second sudden death kick past Spain Park’s goalkeeper to secure the win.

            The Eagles take on Prattville in the finals Saturday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park at 1 p.m.

            Tommy DePriest scored the game’s first goal in the opening period for Oak Mountain but Brandon Lemier tied the game at 1-1 18 minutes later. Drew Thurmond’s second-half goal gave Spain Park its only lead at the 38-minute mark, and John Imwalle tied the game 18 minutes later for Oak Mountain.

            In the first shootout, each team managed three goals to set up the final sudden-death shootout.      


Prattville 2, Fairhope 0
          
The Lions had a goal in each half and turned away all nine Fairhope shots on goal to advance to the 6A finals Saturday. Kyle Nickels got the first goal at 19:20 in the first half thanks in part to a pass from Ryan Marshall. Owen Nichols got the las goal at 10:41 in the second half.

Goalkeeper Justin Marshall got the shutout with eight six saves. Ty Marshall had seven saves on goal for Fairhope.


CLASS 6A GIRLS SEMI-FINALS
Mountain Brook 4, Spain Park 3 (2 OT and shootout)
            The Spartans (22-0-3) fell behind 3-0 in the first half as Spain Park turned in a gritty and intense defensive effort.
            Mountain Brook battled back to tie the game, however, with three second-half goals and then survived two scoreless overtime periods to set up the showdown in the shootout.
            Mountain Brook nailed its first four shootout kicks and Spartans keeper Bonnie Lepoley, who moved from midfielder to defend the goal in the shootout, foiled the Jaguars’ first two tries to seal the win.
            Kim Pettit scored two first-half goals for Spain Park (21-5-1). Brittany Morgan added the other goal. In the second half, Sydney Dulin, Margaret Crawford and Brinson Brown tied the match by the 8:42 mark to set up the shootout.
            Crawford, Carson Scott, Brown and Koula Callahan got their kicks past Spain Park goalkeeper Lauren Arnold in the shootout. Lakin Eddy was the only Jaguar to get a shot past Lepley.


Auburn 2, Enterprise 1

            Betsy Pudner scored twice in the first half and the Auburn defense staved off Enterprise’s furious second-half comeback to advance to the Class 6A state soccer finals here at John Hunt Park.

            Auburn (13-4-3) will meet unbeaten Mountain Brook (22-0-3) in the finals Saturday at 11 a.m.

            Lydia Townsend scored the lone Enterprise goal with 18:08 left in the second period. The Wildcats (25-1-1) got a solid effort from keeper Jennifer Burnash, who had nine saves. Kristin Boydston had three saves for the Tigers.


CLASS 5A GIRLS SEMI-FINALS

Briarwood Christian 8, John Carroll 1

            Lauren Silvio had a hat trick with three goals and teammates Lindsey Sillers and Cayla Drennen added two goals each as Briarwood (15-4-2) advanced to the finals to face Decatur.

            Marena Mallay scored the Lady Cavaliers’ only goal.

            Keeper Deborah Ross also had four saves on goal for the Lions, and Anna Kilgore had seven saves for John Carroll (11-8-2).

 

Decatur 3, Athens 1

            Magan Schmidt, Meg Adams and Sally Adams each had a goal to spark Decatur (18-6-5) to the win. Brenna Horrocks had the lone goal for Athens (16-6-0).


CLASS 5A BOYS SEMI-FINALS

Briarwood Christian 3, Benjamin Russell 0

            The Lions advanced to the 5A finals –just like the Briarwood girls – with the shutout win over Benjamin Russell in the boys semifinals Friday.

            The Lions allowed only seven shots on goal with goalkeeper Jeremy Box notching one save. Scoring goals for Briarwood (14-7-4) were Sean Tilford, Alex Faulk and Jack Wood. Benjamin Russell wound up 17-11-1.


John Carroll 6, Brewer 1

            Also advancing to Saturday’s 5A boys finals scheduled for 1 p.m. at John Hunt Park here at Huntsville was John Carroll (21-2-2).

            After Brewer (17-6-0) spotted John Carroll a 1-0 lead by kicking thr game’s first goal into its own net, Alex Kuklinski had the next three goals for the Cavaliers to build a 4-0 lead. Reed Matte and Mark Slovensky got the final two goals – the latter one coming on penalty kick.

            Keith Slater scored the only goal for the Patriots in the second half.

CLASS 1A-4A GIRLS SEMI-FINALS

 Guntersville 5,Madison Academy 0

             Melanie Stewart scored two goals, including one on a free kick from almost 50 yards out, and teammate Quinessa Moore also had two goals as Guntersville (17-1-1) downed Madison Academy (15-6-0) in the AHSAA state soccer tournament semifinals.

             Carlye Bice had the other goal for the Wildcats, who now face Indian Springs in the finals Saturday at 9 a.m. at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex.

 

Indian Springs 3, Altamont 2 (overtime)

             Betsy Stewart’s goal with 3:30 remaining in overtime lifted Indian Springs (15-7-1) beat Altamont (9-10-4). Stewart finished with two goals and Devon Weldon had the other.

             Down 2-0 in the second half, Kathryn Holladay notched a goal on an assist from Libby Musgrave with 8:29 remaining and Mary Alice Reilly tied the game with 57 seconds left in the second half on a strong kick from just outside the box.

 

CLASS 1A-4A BOYS SEMI-FINALS

 Indian Springs 1, Houston Academy 0

             Thomas Fox’s goal with 34:34 left in the first half stood the test of time as Indian Springs (21-6-1) advanced to the finals Saturday at 11 a.m

            Fox took a pass from Everett Smith – his only shot on goal. Goalkeeper Seth McGowan had seven saves for Houston Academy (10-11-0) and Freddie Delchamps had three saves for Indian Springs.

 

Randolph 2, East Limestone 1 (2 overtimes)

            Randolph’s Alex Clay scored his team’s only goal in regulation on a penalty kick, then scored the game winner in the second overtime to seal the semifinal win.

            East Limestone (14-4-3) took an early 1-0 lead on Danny Boersma’s kick which resulted from Sam Keiser’s assist.

            Randolph improved to 18-4-0.
