2008 Girls State Finals Summaries

     
 

Class 1A
FINALS

Spring Garden 61, McIntosh 44

             Spring Garden senior Paige Anderson scored 31 points Wednesday afternoon and the Panthers closed out the winningest season in school history on the way to the school’s fourth Class 1A state girls basketball title.

            Coached by Ricky Austin, Spring Garden (36-0) closed strong to snap the state’s longest current winning streak at 64 games. McIntosh (29-1) won the 2006 and 2007 state crowns and was 29-0 heading into the finals.

            The 64-game winning streak now ranks second only to Athens’ 69 wins from 2001-2003.

            Bridget Parris added 14 points and 14 rebounds and Hannah Hutcheson chipped in 12 points with an 8-for-8 free-throw shooting performance.

            Brittany Simmons had 19 points for McIntosh. Jakia Reed added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Velencia Reed had 10 points.
          
Named to the All-Tourney team were MVP Paige Anderson of Spring Garden; Bernisha Harris, R.A. Hubbard; Brittany Simmons, McIntosh; Bridget Parris, Spring Garden; Jakia Reed, McIntosh; and Hannah Hutcheson, Spring Garden.


SEMI-FINALS

Spring Garden 56, St. Jude 41

            Senior Paige Anderson keyed a second-half surge as second-ranked Spring Garden (35-0) advanced to the Class 1A state finals with the win over St. Jude (16-10). The victory sets up the Class 1A championship Wednesday afternoon against defending state champion McIntosh.

            Anderson, MVP of the Northeast Regional last week for the third time in a row, had 27 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds. Bridget Parris also had 17 points and 13 boards. The Panthers outscored the Pirates 33-21 in the final two quarters.

            Teralisah Balty had 12 points and Taylor Sippial 11 for St. Jude.

 

McIntosh 63, R.A. Hubbard 41

            The top-ranked Blue Demons (29-0) won their 64th game in a row as four players scored in double figures. Point guard Brittany Simmons had 23 points and 15 rebounds. Jakia Reed added 11 points and 13 rebounds and Xavier Barnes scored 12 points.

            R.A. Hubbard (18-12) was paced by Chasity Puryear and Bernisha Harris with 17 points each. Harris also had a game-high 16 rebounds.

 

Class 2A

FINALS

Cold Springs 55, Reeltown 54

            Tournament MVP Paige Parker, a junior, sank 3-of-4 3-point goals and was 5-of-5 at the foul line to finish with 16 points and Georgia Myrex sank 4-of-7 treys and wound up with 17 points and five assists for winning Cold Springs (36-1).

            The top-ranked Eagles nailed 11 for the game with Kayla Johnson netting three treys to finish with nine points and seven rebounds.

            Shaina O’Neal led all scorers with 28 points for second-ranked Reeltown (29-5). Desiree Heard also had 16. O’Neal was 3-of-4 on 3-point attempts and also had six assists.

SEMI-FINALS

Cold Springs 84, Samson 47

            Top-ranked Cold Springs (35-1) moved into the Class 2A girls state finals Monday night with a blazing 51.6 percent shooting performance – led by junior Paige Parker.

            Parker was 10-of-16 for coach Tammy West’s Eagles, including 5-of-9 from the 3-point arc, and finished with 30 points. She was also 5-of-5 at the foul line.  Teammate Palee Myrex added 20 points, Jessi Harbison and Georgia Myrex 15 each as the Eagles ousted defending state champion and third-ranked Samson (26-5).

            The Tigers were led by Trianna Reeves with 17 points and Kala Bess with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

            Cold Springs and second-ranked Reeltown will play in the finals Thursday at the BJCC at 4 p.m


Reeltown 63, Ider 55

            The second-ranked Rebels (29-4) clinched a berth in the Class 2A state finals for the second year in a row with a strong fourth-quarter finish.

            Senior guard Shaina O’Neal, the daughter of head coach Jackie O’Neal, had 14 points and handed out 12 assists. Tikkela Daniel led with 16 points, Desiree Heard added 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Mercedes Scott chipped in 12 points.

            For Ider (23-10), Hilary Phillips had 17 points, Taylor Hawkins, 14, and Brittany Spurgin, 11. Kayla Beaty had 14 rebounds to go with her 8 points.

Class 3A

FINALS

Crossville 55, Geneva 52

            Ashley Bright sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to lift Crossville (22-10) to the Class 3A girls state title.

            The Lions trailed 40-35 heading into the final quarter but outscored the seventh-ranked Panthers (26-6) in the last period 20-12.

            Bright finished 4-for-4 at the foul line for four points. Tourney MVP Courtney Thacker had 22 points, including three 3-pointers while Emily Peek and Felicity Adkins chipped in eight points each. Peek also had eight rebounds.

            Jade Broxton scored 16 points, Lessie Scott had 15 and 19 rebounds – including 10 on the offensive boards – and Jasmine Wiggins added 12 points for Geneva.

            All-Tourney Team: Courtney Thacker, Crossville (MVP); Emily Peek, Crossville; Lessie Scott, Geneva; Jade Broxton, Geneva; Aerial Woods, Aliceville; Kiara Young, Lauderdale County.


SEMI-FINALS

Crossville 60, Aliceville 59

            Courtney Thacker sank a short jumper with three seconds left to lift Crossville (21-10) past Aliceville Tuesday at the BJCC. The victory sends the Lions into the girls Class 3A finals Thursday againstGeneva.

            Thacker finished with a team-high 23 points and nine rebounds. She was 6-of-8 at the foul line. Teammate Emily Peek also had 19 points and eight boards.

Ninth-ranked Aliceville (25-10) got 13 points each from Aerial Woods and Tywanna Hinton. Tiedre Owens added nine points and 11 rebounds.

 

Geneva 54, Lauderdale County 52

The seventh-ranked Panthers (26-5) sank five free throws in the final 18 seconds to nip third-ranked Lauderdale County (29-7) and clinch the second berth in the 3A girls finals.

Lalicia Morris nailed 3-of-4 free throws in that stretch and finished with five points for Geneva. Cheree Duncan led with 17 points, Lessie Scott added 15 and Jade Broxton chipped in with 12. Scott also had 13 rebounds.

Kiara Young led Lauderdale County with 33 points. Christine Wilson added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Class 4A

FINALS

Midfield 84, Deshler 52

            Seniors Erica Baylor and Courtney Jones earned co-MVP honors as top-ranked Midfield (31-1) won its second consecutive Class 4A girls state basketball title Friday at the BJCC.

            Baylor led all scorers with 25 points including a sizzling 5-of-7 on 3-pointers. Jones, who signed with LSU, had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Meredith Mitchell, aGeorgia early signee, added 18 points. Brandi Turner had 11 with 7-of-8 at the foul line.

            Tarnisha Whitson and Birdie Bowens had 12 points each and Ashleigh Jackson scored  10 for third-ranked Deshler (29-4).

SEMI-FINALS
Midfield 71, DAR 33

            The top-ranked and defending 4A state champion Patriots (30-1) got a big performance from sixth girl Erica Baylor, who came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points. She canned four 3-pointers as Midfield moved into the state finals for the third time in four years.

            LSU signee Courtney Jones chipped in 15 points and 15 rebounds. Georgia signee Meredith Mitchell also had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

            Fourth-ranked DAR (27-6), which shot only 21.7 percent (10-of-46) from the field for the game, was led by Autumn Largen’s 14 points. Jessica Cooper also had 10.

 
Deshler 60, T.R. Miller 42

            Third-ranked Deshler (29-3) advanced to the 4A finals to face top-ranked Midfield with Birdie Bowens pouring in 25 points in the semifinal win Tuesday at the BJCC.

            Bowens nailed four 3-point goals in eight tries.  Tarnisha Whitson added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Ashleigh Jackson had 12 points and 10 boards.

            Catherine Green’s 12 points led T.R. Miller (21-5).

Class 5A

FINALS

Eufaula 64, Talladega 53

            Eufaula (32-2) won the battle of No. 1 versus No. 2 as tournament MVP Terran Condrey scored 30 points. She was 11-of-18 from the field and 8-of-10 from the field and also grabbed 11 rebounds as Eufaula claimed the 5A state title at the BJCC.

            The top-ranked Tigers also got 16 points from Brianne White.

            Leading second-ranked Talladega (30-3) was Jameica Rivers with 18 points. Jessica Merritt chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds.

SEMI-FINALS


Talladega
47, Ramsay 46

Jameica Rivers’ short jumper at the buzzer lifted second-ranked Talladega (30-2) past Ramsay and halted the Rams’ four-year reign as Class 5A state champs.

Rivers finished with eight points. Her winning basket was set up by teammate Jessica Merritt, who took an inbounds pass with 10 seconds left and drove the length of the court where she drove the basket and passed to the open Rivers with just two seconds left. Merritt finished with 14 points and three assists.  Jamie Keith also had 10 points and was 5-of-5 at the foul line.

Fifth-ranked Ramsay (18-13) was led by Danielle Hicks’ 16 points and 13 by Kaneisha Horn. The Rams won state titles in 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004 and had a winning streak in the Final Four snapped at eight games and in the state playoffs at 33.

 

Eufaula 54, Wenonah 48

Terran Condrey scored 16 points and Brianne White 14 as top-ranked Eufaula (31-2) moved into the finals to face second-ranked Talladega. The championship will be Friday afternoon at the BJCC.

Ashley Williams also had seven points and 11 rebounds.

Keiara Middleton paced Wenonah (18-10) with 18 points and Karneisha Garrett had 12 and nine rebounds.

Class 6A
FINALS

Bob Jones 48, Clay-Chalkville 42

             Kellie Cook earned MVP honors with 22 points as top-ranked Bob Jones (35-2) won its first state girls Class 6A basketball championship.

            Jala Harris added 15 points and nine rebounds and Semetria Gideon had nine points and eight rebounds.

            Clay-Chalkville (28-7) got 17 points from CeCe Kennon and eight from Brantli Nichols.
            All-Tournament Team: Kelli Cook, Bob Jones (MVP); Shelby Trotter (Robertsdale), Brantli Nichols and CeCe Kennon (Clay-Chalkville), Jala Harris and Semetria Gideon (Bob Jones).


SEMI-FINALS
Clay-Chalkville 50,Selma 32
          The sixth-ranked Cougars (28-6) sank 8-of-18 3-pointers and outscored fifth-ranked Selma (32-1) 16-2 in the final quarter to advance to the Class 6A state finals Friday night.
         Emily Landers nailed three treys and finished with nine points for Clay-Chalkville, which had five players hit at least one 3-point goal. Alex Strickland led with 13 points, Brandi Nichols had nine and seven assists.
         Selma was led by Keysah Moore’s 11 points.

Bob Jones 72, Robertsdale 31

         Kellie Cook scored 20 points and Olivia Petty added 11 as top-ranked Bob Jones (34-2) rolled past Robertsdale (21-10) into the Class 6A girls finals.

         The Patriots outscored the Bears 18-0 in the third quarter to blow the game wide open.
        
Shelby Trotter scored 19 points to lead Robertsdale, which was making its first State Finals appearance ever.
