Hubbertville Back Sets Two State Records


           Hubbertville High School running back Tommy Haley-Ricks closed the 2008 prep football season last Friday night in record fashion.

            Grabbing the AHSAA Prep Spotlight for Week 10 of the prep season, Haley-Ricks rushed 420 yards on 24 carries and set two AHSAA state records in the Lions’ 76-52 win over Vina.

            Hubbertville didn’t make the playoffs this season, but the Lions senior runner did make two single game standards in the AHSAA state record book with his nine TDS and 58 points. He had touchdown runs of  7, 64, 13, 60, 55, 41, 35 and 7 yards and caught a TD pass for 49 yards. He also scored a pair of two-point conversions to establish the state mark single game point total.

             Haley-Ricks finished with 541 total yards, the fifth most in state history. His total yards rank his performance third best all time. Eight players previously held a share of the state single-game TD mark of eight. Haley-Ricks’ 58 points broke the state record held previously by current University of Kentucky team captain Tony Dixon (of Parrish) by one point.

            Haley-Ricks finnished the season with 2,203 yards rushing and 32 TDs and ended his career with 4,958 yards in only 30 games..

STEVEN WALKER, BRANTLEY: Walker had 10 tackles and also blocked a field goal on the game's final play to preserve Class 1A Brantley's undefeated season with a 26-24 win over Class 4A Daleville. Walker also rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

CLINT MOSELEY, LEROY: Was 21-of-29 passing for 308 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another in a 28-21 win over Sweet Water, which snapped the top-ranked 1A Bulldogs’ winning streak at 36 games. Top-ranked 2A Leroy extended its current win streak to 20 with the win.

SETH BAKER, SPRINGVILLE: Was 25-of-31 passing for 340 yards and two touchdowns as Springville beat Ashville 50-28.

PAUL BARBER, BRIARWOOD CHRISTIAN: Was 19-of-33 for 304 yards and three touchdowns in a 21-13 win over Anniston.

CHARLES PAYNE, SIDNEY LANIER: Caught eight passes for 244 yards, including a 97-yard touchdown, in a 35-17 loss to Carver-Montgomery.

JUSTIN EVANS, MIDFIELD: Completed 26-of-35 passes for 337 yards and a touchdown against Fairfield despite playing with bruised ribs in the Patriots’ first setback of the year.

BRIAN PARK, WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN: Park was 15-of-20 passing for 248 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for 40 yards on six carries and three more scores – all in the first half --  as Westminster downed Parkway Christian 48-0.    Park finished the season completing 246-of-391 passes for 2,813 yards and 29 touchdowns in 10 games.

ZANE PULLEN, BOAZ: The Pirates senior defensive end recorded 10 tackles, including 6 for loss, a school record four sacks, caused a fumble and recovered a fumble as Boaz beat R.A. Hubbard 40-8.

MIKE SMITH, TALLASSEE: The running back rushed for 303 yards and three touchdowns (35, 4, 22) in a 37-13 win over Holtville.

CASEY O’TOOLE, ONEONTA: Despite playing just the first half, the senior quarterback completed 14-of-21 passes for 229 yards and five touchdowns in the Redskins' 34-6 victory over J.B. Pennington. Teammate Nolen Smith hauled in 10 of the completions for 151 yards and four scores (10, 21, 15 and 85 yards).

JO JO TOLVER, GENEVA: Tolver accounted for four touchdowns, scoring in three different ways, all in the first half of a 41-13 win over Samson. On the game's opening play, Tolver threw a a 65-yard touchdown pass on a wide receiver reverse, then caught touchdown passes of 28 and 22 yards from Brad Horne. He then lined up at quarterback and raced 67 yards for another score. His four scores totaled 182 yards. He had one more touch the rest of the night for no additional yards.

JERMAINE "JUICY' WILLIAMS, SLOCOMB: Williams rushed for 251 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns, including 177 and all three scores in the second half, as the  Red Tops beat Geneva County 35-14. His scoring runs of 3, 3 and 55 yards helped overcome a 7-6 halftime deficit.

TONY GRAY, ENTERPRISEGray, Enterprise's quarterback, accounted for 210 yards and five touchdowns in the Wildcats' 34-14 win over Jeff Davis. Gray rushed for 108 yards on 14 carries and touchdown runs of 14, 1, 33 and 9 yards and threw for 102 yards on 4-of-9 passing with a 57-yard TD pass to Xavier Frazier.

MICHAEL THOMPSON, HEADLAND:  Thompson rushed for 217 yards on 24 carries and all three Ram touchdowns in a 24-18 win over Houston County. Thompson scored on runs of 1, 49 and 40 yards.

PRESTON JONES, PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN: Jones accounted for 218 yards and three scores in a 42-16 win for the Class 1A Eagles over 3A Wicksburg. Jones rushed for 159 yards and touchdown runs of 14 and 53 yards and caught two passes for 59 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown pass.

MARCUS GLANTON, COTTONWOOD: Glanton had 14 total tackles, including three for losses and two more for sacks, and also deflected a lateral that resulted in a 10-yard loss in the Class 2A Bears' 20-15 win over 3A playoff team Dale County.

DERRICK COLVIN, JACKSON-OLIN: Was 22-of-29 passing for 301 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 114 yards and three more touchdowns as the Mustangs beat Woodlawn.

CHASE CHILDERS, PIEDMONT: Completed 7-of-9 passes for 193 yards and three scores (59, 30 and 15 yards), rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries and three more scores (12, 1 and 23 yards), and had an interception as Piedmont downed Woodland 42-33.

ANTONIO YOUNGBLOOD, CHARLES HENDERSON: The defensive end had two fumble recoveries, an interception and a sack in the Class 5A Trojans' 35-27 victory over 6A Northview.

CORY LEE, PRATTVILLE: The linebacker recorded 10 tackles, including three sacks, and forced a fumble that was recovered for a touchdown in Prattville's 47-0 win over top-ranked Class 5A Central-Tuscaloosa that snapped the Falcons’ 23-game win streak.

TREY HILLARD, GARDEN­DALE: Had 174 yards rushing, 160 re­ceiving and five  touch­downs in the Rockets' 57-14 win over Mortimer Jordan.

ANTHONY DAVIS & TA­VON ARRINGTON, HUEYTOWN: Each had 14 tackles while Da­vis added an interception as the Gophers defeated Pell City 40-27.

NICK REED, GAYLESVILLE: Had three interceptions to go along with eight tackles in Gaylesville’s 61-6 win over Jefferson Christian. Teammate Andrew Lindsey posted a team-high 16 tackles (one for lost yardage), had three sacks and a fumble recovery.

AMOS DRAPER, TANNER: Had 12 tackles, a sack and batted down a pass as the No. 3 Rattlers defeated 3A No. 7 Elkmont 24-9 to remain undefeated.
