2009 Final 48 Game Summaries - 5A & 6A



Class 6A Girls Championship

Bob Jones 56, Hoover 43

            Bob Jones High School (33-3) rolled past Hoover with a big second-quarter Saturday and clinched its second straight Class 6A state girls basketball championship.

            Senior Jala Harris scored 21 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the foul line, and handed out five assists to earn MVP honors for the Lady Patriots. Sametria Gideon also had 14 points and seven rebounds. Kylie Cook added 10 points.

            Karnesha Garrett led Hoover with 13 points and six rebounds. Jazmine Martin also had 12 points.

            ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Joining Harris were teammates Gideon and Kelli Cook, Hoover’s Garrett, Martin and Karnesha Burch.



Class 6A Girls Semifinals
Bob Jones 47, Davidson 30

 

Bob Jones (32-3) took control of the contest early and held on for a 47-30 victory over Davidson. The Patriots were led by Kelli Cook with 15 points and four rebounds.  Sametria Gideon was credited with eight points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

The Patroits led 13-6 after the first quarter and were up 40-23 after three quarters.

For Davidson (32-5), Portia Kirksey finished with 11 points and five rebounds while Sheanice Rhoden had nine points and two steals.

Bob Jones plays Hoover for the 6A championship Saturday.

Hoover 58, Smiths Station 33

Using a strong rebounding advantage, Hoover defeated Smiths Station 58-33 to advance to the Class 6A finals.

Hoover (30-5) was led by Kayla Anderson with 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.  Karneshia Garrett had 10 points and six rebounds while Kanesha Burch had two points and 12 rebounds.

 

For Smiths Station (29-5), Vannessa Peterson had 11 points and seven rebounds while Erika Jones had six points and 16 rebounds.

Bob Jones and Hoover will meet Saturday for the 6A championship.


Class 6A Boys Championship

Vestavia Hills 61, Bob Jones 52

Jordan Swing tallied 33 points (including 4-9 three-pointers) along with six rebounds and four steals as the Vestavia Hills Rebels downed the Patriots of Bob Jones.

Swing had 13 of Vestavia's 24 first-half points and two momentum-swinging three-pointers in the fourth period that gave the Rebels a lead they would not lose.

The win gave Vestavia (28-8) its second state title in 11 trips to the state tournament. Other top performances for the Rebels were William Dillard (eight points) and Charles Gordon (seven points, four rebounds).

For Bob Jones (29-9), Levi Randolph tallied 21 points, six rebounds and four steals while Reggie Ragland and Robert Finley each finished with eight points.

 

Class 6A Boys Semi-Finals
Bob Jones 64, Sidney Lanier 51
 
Reggie Ragland finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Bob Jones downed Sidney Lanier 64-51. Levi Randolph added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Patriots (29-8) as they advanced to the 6A championship.

Bob Jones controlled the first half, building a 35-20 halftime lead.  The second half saw Sidney Lanier attempt to get back into the contest, but Bob Jones held on with a strong fourth quarter performance.

For Sidney Lanier (21-9), Marquis Glaze had 14 points while Jaime Washington added 12.  Nathaniel Patrick added 10 points and six rebounds for the Poets.


Vestavia Hills 44, Central-Phenix City 37
Vestavia Hills held off a late charge to defeat Central-Phenix City 44-37 to advance to the 6A championship game Saturday.

The Rebels (26-8) were led by Jordan Swing, who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Christopher Taylor added eight points and eight rebounds.

Central (24-4) trailed 27-19 entering the final period before clawing back into the game.  The Red Devils cut the lead to one point with less than two minutes remaining before Vestavia Hills pulled away and sealed the victory.

The Red Devils were led by Darren Daniel (12 points) and Joseph Thompson (eight points, seven rebounds).



Class 5A Girls Championship

LeFlore 68, Brewer 60

Jocelyn Shaw tallied 29 points and nine rebounds to lead LeFlore to the Class 5A girls championship with a 68-60 Brewer..  The title was the second for the Rattlers and their first since 1994.

LeFlore (25-2) also got 19 points and 13 rebounds from Shanece McKinney and 15 points from Gabrielle Williams.

The Rattlers jumped out to a 14-9 first quarter lead and a 31-17 halftime margin, then maintained their lead throughout the second half even though both teams picked up the intensity.

For Brewer (31-3), Morgan Crawley had a team-high 20 points while Emily Dabbs finished with 19 points.  Elizabeth Bromirski added 11 points and three steals.

Class 5A Girls Semi-Finals
Brewer 58, Carver-Montgomery 56
Brewer withstood a late charge to down Carver-Montgomery 58-56 in 5A semifinal action.

Trailing by as many as 13 points, the Wolverines fought back to tie the score at 53-53 with 52 seconds remaining.  However, Brewer would connect on five free throw attempts to seal the game.

For Brewer (31-2), Morgan Crawley had 20 points and three assists while Kendra Jones finished with 16 points and six rebounds.

For Carver (18-9), Shatavia Farris had 19 points and 17 rebounds while Meghan Perkins totaled 10 points and eight rebounds.

Brewer will play the Fort Payne-LeFlore winner for the 5A state title.

LeFlore 44, Fort Payne 34
LeFlore advanced to the 5A championship with a 44-34 victory over Fort Payne.  The Rattlers will face the Brewer Patriots in the title game.

Fort Payne jumped out 12-7 after one quarter before the Rattlers (24-2) took the lead in the second period.  The intensity picked up over the final two periods, but LeFlore would hold on for the win.

For LeFlore, Shanece McKinney tallied 12 points and nine rebounds while Gabrielle Williams had 12 points and five rebounds.

For Fort Payne (27-8), Jordan Conner scored 11 points while Alicia Williams chalked up nine points and seven rebounds.

 

Class 5A Boys Championship

Butler 55, Parker 45

Butler’s Rebels outscored Parker 17-8 in the second quarter to build 13-point halftime lead and then fought off the inspired Thundering Herd the rest of the way to claim the 2009 Class 5A state boys basketball title.

            Coach Jack Doss’ Rebels (34-3) relied on balanced scoring with 5A Tourney MVP Trevor Lacey scoring 14 points, Ryan Ervin, 13 and Dallas Jones, 11. Lacey, who had 10 assists in the semifinals, handed out three more in the finals and also had two steals. Erwin’s 11 rebounds were tops in the game.

            Parker (28-6) was paced by Eric Bledsoe’s 17 points. Neko Mosley also had 13. Bledsoe also led the Herd with eight rebounds and five steals.

            The state title was Butler’s second in a row and fourth since 2002.

            ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Joining Lacey were teammates Carlos Clayborn and Ryan Ervin, Bledsoe and Mosley of Parker, Clifford Tuck of Talladega and Marlon Ford of LeFlore.



Class 5A Boys Semifinals
Butler 90, Talladega 75
The Butler Rebels downed the Talladega Tigers 90-75 in 5A semifinal action Friday.

Butler controlled the game from early in the first quarter, building a 28-point lead during the second period.

For the Rebels (33-3), Ryan Ervin had a game-high 31 points along with two steals.  Carlos Clayborn finished with 23 points and four assists while Trevor Lacey and Charles Steele each scored 11 points.

For the Tigers (28-7), Clifford Tuck and Justin Fuller each had a team high of 22 points while Tyler Mosley finished with 12 points.

Butler will face Parker for the 5A championship.

Parker 52, LeFlore 39
The Parker Thundering Herd advanced to the Class 5A championship game with a 52-39 win over the LeFlore Rattlers.

The emotional contest saw LeFlore lead the game early before Parker took control of the contest.

For Parker (28-5), Eric Bledsoe had a game-high 17 points along with nine rebounds.  Neko Mosley and Perry Kelvin each added 11 points.

For LeFlore (29-3), Marlon Ford had 12 points and seven rebounds while DeMarcus Cousins finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Parker will meet Butler for the Class 5A championship.
