BIRMINGHAM – Butler’s Trevor Lacey became the second player in history to earn back-to-back Mr. Basketball awards here Wednesday while West Morgan’s Hayden Hamby became the second junior to be named Miss Basketball.
The two were honored at the 2011 Alabama Sports Writers Association's Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards luncheon sponsored by Hibbett Sports and hosted by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center.
John Carroll’s Ronald Steele was the first player to earn the Mr. Basketball honor in consecutive years (2003 and 2004). Hamby joins 1998 Miss Basketball Gwen Jackson of Eufaula as the only other junior to receive the award that was started in 1988. Mr. Basketball was first selected by the ASWA in 1985.
One of the nation’s top unsigned prospects, the 6-foot-4 Lacey led Butler to the Class 4A championship this season, averaging almost 32 points a game. The 2011 first-team Parade All-American helped the Rebels to Class 5A titles in 2008 and 2009. He was a Class 5A first-team All-State selection three straight years and the Player of the Year in 2010. He was named Class 4A Player of the Year this season.
Lacey heads the ASWA Super Five All-State Team along with 2011 Class 5A Player of the Year Ricky Tarrant of Pleasant Grove, two-time Class 6A Player of the Year Levi Randolph of Bob Jones, Rodney Cooper of Russell County and Class 3A Player of the Year Kevin May of Sumter County. All five are seniors.
The 5-7 Hamby averaged 33 points and 11.4 rebounds a game this season for West Morgan and was selected the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year. She recently committed to play for Purdue University.
Class 3A Player of the Year Hamby leads the girls Super Five that also includes Class 6A Player of the Year Jasmine Jones of Bob Jones, Chardonae Fuqua of Hoover, Class 5A Player of the Year Tia Faleru of Carroll and Class 4A Player of the Year Marques Webb of Brewbaker Tech.
All are juniors except senior Faleru and sophomore Webb.
