North Pounds Out 29 Hits In Baseball Sweep
The North All-Stars pounded out 13 hits in the first game and 16 in the nightcap to sweep the South in the 15th annual All-Star Sports Week baseball doubleheader Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The North now holds a commanding 15-9 lead in the series that began in 1997 when the Alabama High School Athletic Association began All-Star Sports Week. It is coordinated by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association.
Hueytown High School rising senior Jameis Winston slugged a grand slam home run over the right-field wall to highlight a seven-run third inning and sparked the North's first game win.
Winston, who finished 2-of-3 at the plate with a game-leading four RBIs, also pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. He allowed two hits over the third and fourth innings and struck out one. He faced the minimum six batters. Winston also stole one base.
He captured North MVP honors with a single, triple and bases-loaded walk to drive in three runs in game two.
Game 1: North 8, South 4
The North had eight different hitters getting at least one hit and five--Sam Gillikan of Hoover, Alex Lee of Cleburne County, Miller Bonds of Mountain Brook and Adam Lamar of Lauderdale County--had two hits each. Gillikan had a triple.
South MVP Kyler Deese of Auburn had two hits and scored one run.
Stephen Baggett of Homewood started for the North and pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Kyle Overstreet of Boaz pitched two innings with one hit allowed, two walks, three unearned runs and game-high five strikeouts. Jackson Stephens of Oxford pitched the final shutout inning.
South starter Isaac Bradford of Robertsdale pitched 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. Dalton Rentz of St. Paul’s hurled 3 1/3 innings with two hits allowed and five strikeouts to pace the South hurlers.
Game 2: North 13, South 0
Mikey Lee of Spain Park was 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the North hit parade. Alex Lee had two hits and an RBI, Kyle Overstreet added two hits, and Robert Pierce of Pelham tripled in two runs for the North team, which was coached by Noel Stephens of Munford, Josh Johnson of Pinson Valley, Kellen Carter of Sparkman and Jason Anderson of Shoals Christian.
Lee, a lefthander from Cleburne County, pitched the first three innings and combined with Daniel Garner of Sparkman and Adam Lamar of Lauderdale County to hurl the five-hit shutout. Lee struck out two and allowed three hits to notch the win. Garner struck out two in one inning and Lamar have five strikeouts over the final three innings.
Kyler Deese had a single, one of three overall, and Jordan Ebert of Baldwin County stroked a double to pace the South. Garrett Kirkland of Alma Bryant was the South starting pitcher, hurling two shutout innings and striking out four. Kevin Moore of Chilton County pitched the next two innings and got the loss.
