Several Records Fall in 1A, 2A, 3A State Track Meet

 

      American Christian’s boys held a slim 32-28 lead over Vinemont in Class 3A after day one of the 89th AHSAA state track and field championships Friday at Selma’s Memorial Stadium/Ralph “Shug” Jordan Field.
      Greensboro was second and defending 3A state champion Piedmont was third.
      Mobile Christian leads the 2A boys’ competition heading into Saturday with 41 points. Lanett and Montgomery Academy are tied for second with 25 points. Defending 1A state champ Falkville leads with 68 points and Marion County is second with 30.
      In the girls’ competition, Westminster of Oak Mountain totaled 48.50 points to lead Class 1A.  Decatur Heritage has 33 and Addison 30. Montgomery Academy holds a commanding lead in 2A with 55 points. Mobile Christian is second with 22. And, in Class 3A, T.R. Miller has 48.50 points and Bayside Academy 44 heading into the final day.

      Several individual state champions where crowned Friday while some events were prelims with finals scheduled Saturday. Among the winners Friday were:

Wheelchair Division: 
Elena Guavera of Good Hope won the shot put (4-03.50) and 400-meter dash (3:14.76) to capture 20 points with the two first-place finishes. Both are state records in the girls’ wheelchair division.

Class 3A Girls
Karisa Nelson, T.R. Miller:
Set a new record in the 1,600-meter run with a winning time of 4:59.71. That time smashed the previous record of 5:11.11 set last year by Kylie Franks of Montgomery Catholic.
Callie Jones, Cottage Hill Christian: Leaped 17-08.75 in the long jump to take first place.
Tynedra Edwards, Greensboro: Won the shot put with a winning throw of 32-11.50.
Trista Berry, Bayside Academy: Captured the high jump title with a winning leap of 5-04.
Patricia Blackmon, Barbour County: Ran the 400-meter dash in 1:00.26 to beat the field.
Taylor Randall, Vinemont: Won the javelin competition with a 104-foot throw.

Class 2A Girls
Karly Plunkett, Lexington:
Won the javelin event with a winning throw of 113 feet, 5 inches.
Taylor Gerard, Montgomery Academy: Ran the 1,600 meters in 5:33.07 to win first place.
Kayla White, Montgomery Academy: Won the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 58.42 seconds.

Class 1A Girls
Kayla Pruitt, Addison:
Won the high jump competition clearing the bar at 5-1.
Maddie Hoaglund, Westminster-Oak Mountain: Ran 5:26.32 to finish first in the 1,600-meter run.
Kelly Anderson, J.U. Blacksher: Anderson threw the discus 102 feet, 2 inches to finish first.
Schyler Burney, Decatur Heritage: Won the pole vault clearing the bar at 8 feet.
Katie Brooks Boone, Westminster-Oak Mountain: won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.34. She also had the second fastest qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles.
Westminster-Oak Mountain: Shattered the 4x800 relay record of 10:29.70 set by Randolph in 1985 with a 10:10.26 performance. Finishing second was St. Bernard, which also bested Randolph’s record with a 10:21.32 time.

Class 3A Boys
Wesley Curles, Trinity Presbyterian:
Broke his own state record in the 1,600-meter run with a winning time of 4:20.19. He set the mark last year with a time of 4:25.29 – thus shaving 5.10 seconds off the old mark.
Ahmad Bennett, Greensboro: Won the triple jump with a meet best 45-07.75 leap.
Brion Patrick, Barbour County: Won the discus with a winning throw of 143-04.
Cedric Tabb, Greensboro: Had a very strong throw of 173 feet, 1 inch to win the event.
Xavier Jackson, Piedmont: Won the shot put event with 45-11.50 throw.
Denard Spears, Piedmont: Won the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 50.69 seconds.
Birch Bennett, American Christian: Won the pole vault competition clearing 11 feet.
Trinity: Won the 4x800 relay with a winning time of 8:32.49.

Class 2A Boys
Joshua Fuqua, Mobile Christian:
Tossed the shot 48 feet, 3 inches to win the event.
Jack Bargainier, Montgomery Academy: Gave the Eagles a sweep in the 1,600 run with a winning time of 4:40.94.
De’Rodgus Campbell, Isabella: Jumped 21-06.25 to win the long jump competition.
Cameron Trammell, Lanett: Clocked 49.61 seconds in the 400-meter dash to take first place.
Montgomery Academy: Clocked 8:51.92 to take first place in the 4x800 relay.

Class 1A Boys
Bram Miller, Falkville:
 Set a new state record clearing the bar at 6-08. He got some stiff competition from Kynard Craig of Linden and Anfernee Simmons of Keith, who both cleared 6-06.
The record (6-06.25) had been held by St. Jude’s Kerry Harrell since 1999.
Falkville: In one of the best races of the day, Falkville took first place in the 4x800 relay with a state-record time of 8:31.99 to edge out Westminster-Oak Mountain, which also beat the state record mark with an 8:32.70 time. St. Jude had held the state record since running 8:40.70 in 1998.
Jacob Sanders, Marion County: Won the pole vault by clearing 11 feet.
Paul Richardson, Whitesburg Christian: Won the 1,600 run with a time of 4:37.74.
Brandon Ferrell, Loachapoka: Won the triple jump competition with a 42-03.50 leap.
Martavious Brown, Notasulga: Sped the 400-meter distance in 50.33 to win the title.
