Spain Park, Spanish Fort, UMS, Bayside, and Providence Christian Win

Hoover and Muscle Shoals Win Girl’s Golf Titles


      Spain Park, Spanish Fort, UMS-Wright, Bayside Academy, and Providence Christian won AHSAA boys golf state titles Tuesday in Prattville along with Hoover and Muscle Shoals’ girls.


6A Boys
     
All four Spain Park golfers finished at par or below as the Jaguars captured their third Class 6A state championship in a row. It was the sixth boys’ state championship for Spain Park.
      Connor Smith anchored the Jags with a 3-under 141 over the 36-hole tournament played at the RTJ Capitol Hill Golf Club in Prattville. He shot a 72 Tuesday to go with Monday’s 69 to finish second overall behind medalist Steven Setterstrom of McGill-Toolen. Setterstrom fired a 67-69—136 to finish the tournament at 8 under par.
      Rounding out the Spain Park foursome were Vasili Kartos at 72-70—142, Patrick Martin, 72-72—144 and Conley Miller, 70-74—144.  Taylor Eyster of Mountain Brook was tied for third with a two-day 69-73—142 total.

 

5A Boys
      Spanish Fort shot a two-day total of 603 to win the Class 5A boys’ state golf championship at the RTJ Capitol Hill Golf Club in Prattville Tuesday.
      Homewood was second with 627, followed by Briarwood Christian and Hartselle at 628.
      Three Toros golfers finished at 148 for the 36-hole tourney. Charles Woods shot a 73 Tuesday to lead the team. Nick Williamson, who shot a 73 Monday, also had a 148 as did teammate Padraic Sim. Sim carded a 72 in the first round.
      Fort Payne’s Zac McCurdy was low medalist with a 72-71—143 total. His 71 was the low round Tuesday.  Mortimer Jordan’s Garrett Johnson, Athens’ James Medley, Fort Payne’s Cole Skaggs and Lawrence County’s Jesse Childress tied for second at 147. Skaggs and Childress shot first-round 70s  Monday.


4A Boys
      UMS-Wright Preparatory School used consistency to post a 611 total Tuesday and claim the Bulldogs’ 25th boys’ state golf title. Coach Jimbo Tolbert’s team placed all five players in the top 10 – finishing fifth through ninth to secure the Class 4A crown by 25 strokes on the Legislator Course at the RTJ Capitol Hill Golf Club in Prattville.
      The leader for UMS was Stephen Chiepalich, who had a 76-75—151 total for the 36 holes.
      The medalist for the 4A competition was Lee Hodges of Ardmore. He shot 71 on Monday and followed with a 1-over 73 Tuesday for a two-day 144 total. Wells Hooper of St. James was second at 147.


3A Boys
      Bayside Academy shot 5-under 571 as a team to win the Class 3A boys’ state golf championship at Prattville’s RTJ Capitol Hill Tuesday. The runner-up was Trinity Presbyterian at 598.
      The Class 3A competition was last to finish but posted some of the best scores with five golfers completing the 36-hole tournament under par. Bayside’s William Buhl shot a 67 Monday and followed with a 73 Tuesday to finish at 4-under 140 to earn medalist honors. Teammate Jacob Dyas was right behind with 72-70—142, tying Straughn’s Brooks Raben who also shot 72-70—142.
     Eli Marty of Good Hope and Bayside’s Bryce Roush also finished under par at 143. Marty shot the low round of 67 Tuesday.



1A-2A Boys

      Providence Christian’s Calum Masters mastered the RTJ Capitol Hill Golf Club’s Senator course Tuesday with a 7-under 65 as the Dothan school rolled to the Class 1A-2A boys’ state golf championship.
      Masters was medalist with a two-day 136 total after firing a 1-under 71 Monday. Providence finished at 6-over 582 to edge defending champion St. Luke’s and Westbrook Christian, which tied for second, 11 strokes back at 593. His 65 Tuesday tied for second lowest round in AHSAA state tournament history with Matthew Swan of Trinity (2004) and Michael Ulmer of Fairhope (2007). The all-time record was set by William Sellers of Montgomery Academy, who shot a 64 in the 2012 state tournament.
      Westbrook’s Harrison Martin, Marion County’s Cody Maddox, and St. Luke’s duo Payton Massey and Spencer Arnold all tied for second in the individual competition at 142.   

 

6A Girls 

      Hoover High School shot a 228 team total on day two of the AHSAA girls’ state golf championships Tuesday to nip first-day leader Mountain Brook by one stroke to capture the title.
      The Lady Bucs totaled 464 for the 36 holes and the Spartans 465. Spain Park was a close third at 469. Mountain Brook led after day one with a 231 total. Hoover was five shots back at 236. The Spartans shot 234 Tuesday.
      Virginia Green of Fairhope shot 71-69—140 to claim low medalist honors. Jordan Susce of Spain Park shot a 72-69—141 to finish second. Both tied for the low round Tuesday.
      Mountain Brook’s Tatum Jackson was second with two straight rounds of 1-over 73 for 146.  Aleesha Smith of Alma Bryant was fourth at 148 after a 72 Tuesday, and Julie Baker was fifth at 76-73—149.

1A-5A Girls

      Muscle Shoals High School clawed back from a three-stroke deficit after day one to win the Class 1A-5A girls’ state championship by 15 strokes over Alexandria Tuesday.
      The Lady Trojans shot a team 232 total Tuesday to finish at 472. Alexandria, which shot a 237 on Monday, finished at 487 to take second place.
      Westbrook Christian’s Ali Porter shot 77-74—151 and Alexandria's Jordan Gregoria fired 73-78—151 to tie for medalist honors. Brooklyn Terry led Muscle Shoals with a 36-hole total 155. Teammate Katelyn Gilmore carded a 74 Tuesday to tie Porter for the low round and finished at 156. Hannah Sager of Alabama Christian also had a 156.
