Rhodes To Be Honored At Kinston Volleyball Tournament

KINSTON – Former Kinston High School volleyball players plan to honor their long-time volleyball coach Amelia Rhoades at the 25th annual Set-off Tournament at Kinston High School Aug. 22.

A special presentation will be made at noon as many of Mrs. Rhoades’ former players gather to thank the volleyball pioneer.

Current Kinston head coach Janie Wiggins encourages any former players attending to gather at the school Aug. 22.  All former players will be recognized, including those who earned All-State Tournament honors during Coach Rhoades’ career.

Rhoades was a pioneer for girls’ athletics in Southeast Alabama during her three decades in coaching at Kinston and Elba. She brought volleyball to prominence during her 27 years at Kinston where her team won a state championship in 1997 and she earned state coach of the year honors. Her teams were runner-up five times and she coached in the North-South All-Star game. She also coached softball for 22 years, basketball for 12 years and served as Kinston athletic director for nine years.

She is a graduate of Kinston High School and Troy State University.

“We hope to have all of them return to show our appreciation and give thanks to Coach Rhoades,” said Wiggins. “We hope players will bring pictures to share with their old teammates.”

A reception will be held in the Kinston school auditorium to celebrate Coach Rhoades’ contributions to Kinston, to volleyball and to the many young ladies who played in her program.”
