12 Unbeaten Teams Head Into State Football Playoffs

Twelve unbeaten teams and all six defending state champions are in the 192-team field as the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state football playoffs get underway Friday (Nov. 8). All games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
Hoover (10-0), Spanish Fort (10-0) and Madison Academy (10-0), the 2012 Class 6A, 5A and 3A state champions, respectively, are among the dozen teams that emerged though the rugged regular season with unblemished records.
Hoover, the only unbeaten team in Class 6A this season, currently owns a 25-game winning streak, with the Bucs’ last loss coming in the 2011 Super 6 finals to Prattville 35-34. Spanish Fort owns a 19-game win streak, with the last setback a 31-21 decision to St. Paul’s in the 2012 regular season. Madison Academy is riding a 20-game win streak dating back to 2012. Its last loss was to Class 5A Cullman 42-21 in the regular season.
In addition to the Bucs, Toros and Mustangs, other unbeaten teams include: Class 1A: Maplesville (10-0) and Pickens County (10-0); Class 2A: Lanett (9-0); Class 3A: Dale County (10-0), T.R. Miller (10-0), and Saks (10-0); Class 4A: Charles Henderson (10-0); and Class 5A: Jackson (10-0) and Southside-Gadsden (10-0).
Other defending state champions in the field are Class 1A Brantley (8-2), Class 2A Tanner (8-1) and Class 4A UMS-Wright (8-2).
Ninety-six games are set for Friday with 16 in each of the AHSAA’s six classification. The 48th annual state playoffs began with four teams competing for one state championship in what was then Class 4A in 1966. Championship play for all schools was implemented the following year in 1967 with four divisions. The current six-class system began in 1984.
Second-round playoff games are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15, followed by the quarterfinals Nov. 22, semifinals Nov. 29, and the Super 6 state finals Dec. 5-6 at Bryant-Denny Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
