Houston Academy Captures 1A-3A Girls’ Tennis Title

Montgomery Academy Claims 13th Boys’ Tennis Crown

 

1A-3A GIRLS: Raiders Edge Montgomery Academy

      Houston Academy snapped Montgomery Academy’s hold on the Class 1A-3A state girls’ tennis championships Tuesday with a narrow 56-51 win over the Lady Eagles in the 2014 championships at Lagoon Park.
      The Raiders posted wins in three of the six singles finals. Montgomery Academy, with one singles winner and a key victory over Houston Academy in the No. 2 doubles finals, had won six straight 1A-3A state crowns dating back to 2008 and 14 total championships. For Houston Academy, coached by William Hart, the state title was the Dothan school’s eighth overall and fourth since 2003.
      Madison Academy junior Sydney Homan beat Houston Academy’s Natalie Voss at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, for her third consecutive 1A-3A state title. Winning singles titles for Houston Academy were Nicola Voss, an eighth-grader, at No. 2, and sophomores Mary Frances White and Kavita Kantamneni at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
      Homan and Erin Young beat Houston Academy’s Voss sisters at No. 1 doubles. Elizabeth Robertson and Holland Griffin downed Houston Academy’s Claire Duerson and White at No. 2 doubles in the last match of the day, 6-2, 6-2, to keep it close.
      Decatur Heritage was voted the 1A-3A Sportsmanship Award recipient.

1A-3A BOYS: Eagles Capture Fourth Straight Crown
      Montgomery Academy won the Class 1A-3A state boys tennis championship with a dominating team performance Tuesday at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park, winning four singles championships and three doubles titles.
      The Eagles, who now own 13 boys’ state championships overall, totaled 72 points to win easily over runner-up Trinity Presbyterian, which had 34 points. Altamont was third with 29 points and Bayside Academy fourth with 25.
      Bayside’s Trent Kennegieter beat Westbrook Christian’s Charley Rowe 6-1, 6-1 to claim the No. 1 singles title. It marked the second straight No. 1 crown for the Bayside freshman and the fourth in a row for the Admirals overall.
      Montgomery Academy netters Will Spain, Bonner McLemore, James Torbert and Allen Millsap captured singles championships at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. McLemore is the only senior on Eagles Coach David Bethea’s roster. The state title was Montgomery Academy’s fourth in a row and 10th since 2001.
      Hunter Carroll and Clayton Muller combined to capture the No. 1 doubles championship with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tyler Vermillian and Charles Trotman of Montgomery rival Trinity Presbyterian.  Spain and Dunlap won at No. 2 doubles and the team of McLemore and James Torbert made it a sweep, winning the No. 3 doubles crown.
      Fayette County was named Sportsmanship Award recipient.
      Montgomery Academy and Trinity finished 1-2 in the team standings in 2013 as well.
