St. Paul’s Pulls Off Sweep Of Class 5A Boys & Girls Championships 

6A Boys: Vestavia Hills Claim Fourth Straight
      Vestavia Hills dominated the finals Friday to capture their fourth straight Class 6A boys’ state tennis championship. The Rebels won four singles titles and all three doubles championships in the state meet at Mobile’s Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
      Coach Adam Kolasa’s team set a state record with the 85-point team total.
      Zigi Wang beat Bob Jones’ Vince Rekke 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles finals for Vestavia Hills. Cabel Cantrell won at No. 2 singles. He and Wang also won the No. 1 doubles championship. Jack Patton and Brian Akhtar won the No. 4 and No. 5 singles titles for the Rebels.
      Mountain Brook finished second with 61 points and Huntsville was third with 41.
      Fairhope was the Class 6A Sportsmanship Award recipient.

6A Girls: Mountain Brook Claims 26th Title
      Mountain Brook High School captured the 26th girls’ state tennis championship in school history Friday in a tough three-team battle as the 2014 state tennis championships concluded at Mobile’s Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
      The Lady Spartans, coached by Susan Farlow, have won three of the last four 6A state titles.
      Mountain Brook finished with 64 points, Huntsville had 57 and 2013 state champion Vestavia Hills had 56 points.
      Carlee Petro won the No. 1 singles title over Huntsville’s Emma Burgess, 6-1, 6-4 to anchor the Lady Spartans’ effort. Olivia Howe also won at No. 3 singles, and Lil Kilgore at No. 5 for Mountain Brook.
      Spain Park’s Darwin Ellison and Kendal Holaday captured the No. 1 doubles title over Haley Harmon and Hannah Nelson of Vestavia Hills.
      Enterprise was named the Class 6A Sportsmanship Award recipient.

5A Boys: St. Paul’s edges Cullman, Spanish Fort

      St. Paul’s Episcopal won three singles finals and one doubles final to hold off a strong challenge from Cullman and defending champion Spanish Fort to capture the 2014 boys’ Class 5A tennis championship Friday at Mobile’s Copeland-Cox Tennis Center. It was St. Paul’s 10th boys’ state crown.
      The Saints, coached by Laura McGee, totaled 55 points, Cullman had 47, Spanish Fort 45 and Briarwood Christian was a close fourth with 43.
      Spanish Fort’s Barry Booth won the No. 1 singles title with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Clint Watson of Cullman. The win was the fifth in a row at No. 1 singles for a Toros netter.
      St. Paul’s captured championships at No. 4 singles by Benton Weinacker, No. 5 singles by Sam Franklin and No. 6 singles by William Russell. Weinacker and Russell also won the No. 3 doubles title.
      Watson and Baylor Adams won the No. 1 doubles championship for Cullman beating Turner Sankey and Turner Myers of St. Paul’s 6-2, 6-3.
      Spanish Fort was voted the Class 5A Sportsmanship Award recipient.

5A Girls: St. Paul’s Wins 18th Crown

      St. Paul’s made it a Class 5A sweep Friday winning a hard-fought 66-60 victory over runner-up Walker in the Class 5A girls’ state tennis championships at Mobile’s Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
      The Saints boys also won the state championship Friday.
      St. Paul’s, coached by Melissa Baker, won two singles titles and finished second in two others. Muscle Shoals finished third with 39 points and Briarwood was fourth with 35. The Saints have won 18 state titles overall and 11 since 2000.
      Briarwood’s Ashley Ochsenhirt beat Ali Gonzales of St. Paul’s 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles finals. Sydney Mason of Muscle Shoals won over St. Paul’s Ann Mason Hunter at No. 2 with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory. Seline Morrisette (No. 3) and Monnie Slaton (No. 4) won state titles for the Saints.
      Benjamin Russell was named Class 5A Sportsmanship Award recipient.
