Vestavia Hills’ Joseph Lee Wins State Decathlon Title
 

      Vestavia Hills senior Joseph Lee closed out Tuesday’s second day of competition with consistent second-place finishes in the javelin and pole vault events to finish with 5,722 points and win the 2014 state decathlon championship at Hoover High School.
      Hoover’s Daniel Fort set a decathlon record with a winning javelin toss of 190 feet, 6 inches. McGill-Toolen’s Chris Taylor set a new state decathlon record in the pole vault, clearing 15-11. Lee, however, had a 162-01 javelin throw, a 14-11 leap in the pole vault and ran a 4:59.75 in the final event of the day, the 1,500 meters, to seal the championship.
      Taylor was second with 5,339 points followed by first-day leader Caine Robinson of Fairview (5,331), Luc Riddle of Hewitt-Trussville (5,306) and Jonathan Harvey of Hoover (5,132) to round out the top five.
