Spires Sets Record In Winning 2014 Heptathlon 

      St. Paul’s senior Shelley Spires set a new points record Tuesday to win the 2014 AHSAA state heptathlon competition at Hoover High School.
      Spires, who high-jumped 5 feet, 9 ¼ inches Monday to win the event, followed with strong finishes in the long jump and 800-meter run to total 5,000 points. The total eclipsed the record set by former St. Paul’s champion Lacey Dent in 2012 (4,881).
      Kiara Williams of Homewood was second with 4,307 points, Erin Hines of Pelham finished third with 4,221 points, Taylor Young of Altamont was fourth with 4,119 points and Camille Franks of Auburn came in fifth with 4,075.
      Spires, who is headed to the Air Force Academy, totaled 4,776 points in 2013 to win the championship as a junior. She won the long jump with a leap of 18-05.75.
