Brantley, Winfield, & Hartselle Claim State Softball Titles

1A Softball: Brantley 4, Lynn 0      
      Alex Wilcox pitched a four-hit shutout and homered in the finals as Brantley (41-10) downed Lynn 4-0 to capture the Class 1A state softball title Friday night at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park. Wilcox, named the tournament MVP, walked none and struck out seven as the Lady Bulldogs went through the 1A competition undefeated.
      Among the earlier wins was a 3-2 decision over Lynn (48-11) in the winner’s bracket finals Friday. They also downed Sumiton Christian 4-1 in the opener Thursday and topped Addison 12-2.
      Peyton Hill had a double and a single and scored the game’s first run on Sydnee Bryan’s double in the bottom of the third inning. The Bulldogs’ other two runs scored via Lynn miscues.

      Jessica Hireling also had two hits for Brantley.
      Lynn pitcher Mack Tidwell got the loss. Brooklyn Beck and Tiffany Self each had a double for Lynn.

3A Softball: Winfield 12, Pisgah 3       
      Winfield scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 3-2 Pisgah lead and rolled to a 12-3 win over the Eagles in the Class 3A state softball tournament finals at Lagoon Park
      Jordan Kate Easterwood slugged a home run and a single and drove in four runs for the Lady Pirates (35-9), who went undefeated in four games to claim the school’s first fast-pitch state title. Sam Riley added two hits and Taylor Guyton had one hit and scored three runs.
      Winning pitcher Madi Moore allowed 10 hits and struck out eight to get the win. Moore earned MVP honors pitching all four wins. She struck out 34 in the four wins.
      Also named to the All-Tourney team were Emma Atkinson and Micaela Beck. Beck had three home runs and five RBIs in a 7-0 win over White Plains in Winfield’s second win of the tourney.
      Megan Smith had three hits and two RBIs for Pisgah (39-10) in the final game.

5A Softball: Hartselle 3-2, Moody 2-1     
     Hartselle pitcher Jada Hayes hurled a three-hitter and a four-hitter, giving up one run in each game as the Tigers bounced back to defeat Moody twice – 3-1 and 2-1 –in the finals to capture the Class 5A State Softball Championship Friday night at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park.

      After falling to Moody 1-0 in eight innings in the finals of the winners’ bracket, the Tigers (48-14-1)  edged Curry 1-0 to earn a berth in the finals.

      Hayes, named the tournament MVP, pitched all five Hartselle wins in the tournament, including a one-hitter in a 2-0 eight-inning victory over Valley in the opener. She fanned 18 Ram batters in the contest.

      In game one of the finals, she struck out four and overcame five walks. Hope Cain and Ashley Boggs each had a hit and scored a run and Taylor Wascavage and Hannah Jenkins had a hit apiece. Ali Forth drove in a run.

      Jenkins stepped into the limelight in the second game, driving in both Hartselle runs with a homer. Boggs and Wascavage each had a hit in game two.

      Hayes again overcame five walks and struck out two.

      Alexis Moore and Payton Swisher had two hits each for Moody (32-15) in game two and Ashton Clem, Victoria Lewis and Bailey Adams each had a hit in game one of the finals.
