9 Region Champions Fall In First Round Of Playoffs

 

        Nine regular season region champions were beaten Friday in the first round of the 2013 Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state football playoffs as the 192-team field was trimmed to 96. All but one of the 48 second-round games will be played Friday, Nov. 15. In Class 1A, Linden, which shares a stadium, will play McKenzie (9-2) Thursday night at Linden’s City Stadium. All playoff games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
        Three region champs fell in Class 6A as Carver-Montgomery (9-2) knocked off Region 1 champ Blount 31-12, Wetumpka (7-4) edged Region 2 champ Daphne 14-10 and Enterprise (7-4) nipped Region 4 champion Spain Park 30-27 in overtime.
        Athens (8-3) kicked a field goal in the final seconds to eliminate Class 5A Region 6 top seed Center Point 24-22. In Class 3A, Pike County (7-4) bounced Region 4 winner Trinity Presbyterian 21-14, Deshler (8-3) upended Region 6 champion New Hope 54-14 and Glencoe (8-3) ousted Region 7 winner Hanceville 49-35.
        In Class 2A, Region 2 winner Houston Academy lost 22-16 to Hale County (7-4) in Dothan, and in 1A, Brilliant (7-4) beat Region 7 winner Valley Head 32-31.
        All six defending state champions survived the first round. Class 6A Hoover (11-0), riding a 26-game winning streak, hosts Shades Valley (10-1) this week. Class 5A Spanish Fort (11-0) takes a 20-game win streak into a road game at Sylacauga (8-3) and Class 4A UMS-Wright (9-2) hosts Beauregard (9-2).

        Class 3A defending champion Madison Academy (11-0) hosts Hamilton (9-2) with a 21-game win streak on the line, Class 2A Tanner (9-1) hosts North Sand Mountain (9-2), and defending 1A champ Brantley (9-2) plays St. Luke’s Episcopal (8-3) in Brantley.
        Other undefeated teams advancing to the second round include: Class 1A: Maplesville (11-0) and Pickens County (11-0); Class 2A: Lanett (10-0); Class 3A: Dale County (11-0), T.R. Miller (11-0) and Saks (11-0); Class 4A: Charles Henderson (11-0); and Class 5A: Jackson (11-0) and Southside-Gadsden (11-0).
        A total of 48 games are scheduled this week with eight in each of the AHSAA’s six classifications. The 48th annual state playoffs began in 1966 with four teams competing for one state championship in what was then Class 4A. Championship play for all schools was implemented the following year with four divisions. The current six-class system began in 1984.
        Third-round playoff games are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22, followed by the semifinals Nov. 29, and the Super 6 state finals Dec. 5-6 at Bryant-Denny Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
