Auburn, Huntsville Claim State Swimming Titles

 

   UMS-Wright’s Paige Madden and Spain Park’s Will Freeman each set two state individual records Saturday while Auburn and Huntsville captured team titles as the AHSAA state swimming & diving championships ended its two-day run at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center on the campus of Auburn University.
     Auburn won the girls title with 239.2 points. Athens finished second with 154, followed by McGill-Toolen (145.4) third and Huntsville (140.0)  fourth.  A total of 36 girls teams competed in the competition.
      Huntsville’s boys totaled 261 points to claim the boys crown. Bob Jones was second with 234 points, McGill-Toolen (204) third and Auburn (193) fourth.
     A total of five state records were set in the girls competition and four in the boys’ division. Freeman, a senior at Spain Park, set new marks in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:37.31 and in the grueling 500-yard freestyle with a 4:27.36 clocking. His 500 time earned him automatic All-America status.
      Madden,  a freshman, set new standards in the 200-yard individual medley with a winning time of 2:04.13 and in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.37 seconds.

100-Yard Butterfly: Paige Madden, UMS-Wright, 55.37.
100-Yard Freestyle:  Maria Reed, Baker, 51.18.

200-Yard Freestyle Relay: Athens, 1:38.50  (Kobie Melton, Lindsey Martin, Ellen Haapoja, Mallory Underwood).


BOYS
200-Yard Freestyle:
Will Freeman, Spain Park (1:37.31).
200-Yard IM: Foster Ballard, Elmore County, 1:50.24.

500-Yard Freestyle: Will Freeman, Spain Park, 4:27.36.

200-Yard Freestyle Relay: Bob Jones, 1:25.84 (Derek Sander, Chris Burrows, Andrey Tretyakov, Zach Harting).
