Bob Jones Edges Enterprise In Champions Challenge

Bob Jones High School nipped Enterprise 23-20 Saturday night in the Class 6A game of the 8th annual AHSAA Champions Challenge preseason football tripleheader at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl.
Coach Kevin Rose’s Patriots built a 23-7 lead late in the fourth quarter and then staved off a late rally by the Wildcats’ reserves. It took a recovered onside kick with 1:07 remaining to seal the win.
Bob Jones scored twice in the first quarter to gain the upper hand early. Ryan Crooks got the first TD on a 6-yard run with 8:11 left in the period. It was the 11th play of an impressive 84-yard drive that used almost four minutes of the clock.
Tyler Whalen shook loose on a 63-yard scoring run six minutes later but the extra-point try failed. The Patriots of Coach Kevin Rose led 13-0.
Enterprise’s Ramal Jagoe snagged a 35-yard pass from Ryan Allgood for the Wildcats’ only first-half TD midway through the second quarter. Cade Stinnett’s kick cut the Bob Jones lead to 13-7. Jones drove 69 yards late in the quarter to set up Matt Trulock’s 28-yard field goal on the last play of the half. His try one play earlier was short and off its mark, but a five-yard penalty on Coach David Faulkner’s Enterprise defense gave him another try and he made the most of it to give the Patriots a 16-7 halftime lead.
Bob Jones tacked on its final touchdown at 7:28 of the fourth period when Carlos Davis streaked 52 yards for the score. Trulock’s PAT made it a 16-point lead.
The Wildcats used over five minutes but finally got back into the end zone with 2:05 remaining when Ben Griffen tossed s 6-yard TD pass to Austin Brand. Cade Stinnett’s kick made it 23-14. The ensuing onside kick was successful with Stinnett’s high bouncer recovered by Jacob Von Eschenbach at the 49. Six plays later Isaiah Kearse caught a 17-yard TD pass from Matt Marler and Stinnett’s kick cut the lead to 23-20.
Stinnett booted another outstanding onside kick following the final TD, but the Patriots recovered and were able to run out the clock.
Davis rushed for 96 yards on eight carries, Jay Rogers had 82 on nine and Whalen had 76 on four carries as Bob Jones rolled up 360 yards rushing on 44 attempts. Whalen was also 9-of-15 passing for 79 yards.
