Central Honors Former Coach Ron Nelson
Central High School and the City of Phenix City honored former Central baseball coach Ron Nelson Thursday by retiring his “No. 1” jersey and renaming the school’s baseball field Darnell-Nelson Field.
Nelson coached the Red Devils baseball program for 24 years – from 1984-2009 – amassing 513 victories, 16 area championships and two trips to the Class 6A state baseball finals.
His teams reached the playoffs 20 times and had 25 or more wins in seven seasons. Nelson also compiled a 94-52 record as Central’s head football coach for 11 seasons.
