Geraldine, J.B. Pennington Roll Up Over 1,200 Yards;

 

Bulldogs’ 77-43 Victory Earns Playoff Berth And Week 8 Spotlight

 

        Geraldine’s 77-43 victory over J.B. Pennington Friday night added several new entries into the AHSAA football record book and also propelled both schools into the AHSAA Prep Spotlight for Week 8.
        The Bulldogs (6-2) clinched a playoff berth with a 724-yard team rushing performance. Coach Tim Arnold’s team improved to 5-1 in Class 3A, Region 6 and moved into a three-way deadlock for the region championship with New Hope and Plainview heading into the final week of region play.
        J.B. Pennington (3-5), which is tied with Pisgah in the fourth slot at 3-3, totaled 528 yards with quarterback Brandon Butts completing 29-of-49 passes for 457 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 56 yards on six carries with another TD. He finished with 513 total yards.
        The 120 total points ties for ninth in AHSAA records with Phillips of Bear Creek and Mt. Hope, which totaled 120 in an 80-40 Bears win in 2008. The two teams combined for 1,262 total yards, which ranks second all-time behind Cordova and Trinity’s1,266-yard total in 2008. Geraldine finished with 734 total yards and Pennington had 528.
        The 724 yards rushing by Geraldine ranks second all-time behind Parrish’s 806 yards in an 81-58 win over Hubbertville in 2003 and moved ahead of Pleasant Grove’s 701-yard effort in a 76-45 win over Gardendale in 2000. 

        Marcus Davis rushed for 332 yards and two TDs on 20 carries to lead the pack. Devan Totherow added 167 yards and three TDs on 12 carries and Jake Bolen had 154 yards and four TDs on eight attempts. Totherow also caught a 10-yard TD pass.
        Senior receiver Hunter Etheredge had 14 catches for 298 yards and two touchdowns for Coach Keith Garner’s Tigers. Butts’ pass completions place him in a tie for 14th all-time, his yardage 16th and his total offense 11th. Etheredge’s 14 catches ties for 13th in the AHSAA record book. His yardage ranks tied for fourth with Fayette County’s Sam Collins, who had 298 yards versus Pleasant Grove in 1997.

MILESTONES
Lanett High School:
Set a school record with 653 yards rushing in a 53-7 win over Prattville Christian that clinched the Class 2A, Region 4 title. The Panthers (8-0) rushed 37 times for an average of 17.6 yards per carry and ran for eight TDs. Jamarious Barrow led the way with 236 yards and two TDs on 12 carries. Cameron Trammell added 121 yards and three TDs on five carries, Marlon Bridges had nine varies for 98 yards and a score, and freshman Melvaunta Robinson had 93 yards on nine carries with a TD.

        Bridges now has 1,314 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season on 108 carries. Coach Clifford Story’s team now has 3,197 yards and 37 TDs rushing this season – an average of 399.6 yards per game. The win clinched Lanett’s first region title since 2007.
DAR High School: Clinched its first-ever state football playoff berth with a 34-14 win over Pope John Paul II Catholic. Dalton Parks, who turned 16 last Friday, rushed for 140 yards on 22 carries and completed one pass for 37 yards in the important Class 4A, Region 7 win.

 

RUSHING
Daquan Guice, Barbour County:
The Jaguars’ running back rushed for 351 yards and four touchdowns and also made 10 tackles in a 51-8 win over Montgomery Catholic. He scored on runs of 80, 12, 7 and 45 yards.

Malik Rosier, Faith Academy: Accounted for 488 yards and four touchdowns in the Rams’ 41-33 victory over B.C. Rain. The Miami commitment rushed for 217 yards on 15 carries and scored on runs of 1, 4, and 61 yards. He also completed 11-of-18 passes for 231 yards, including a 13-yard TD pass to Willie Jackson.

Ryan Sullivan, Falkville: Rushed for 243 yards, including 185 in the second half, passed for 126 more and had a hand in four scores as the unbeaten Blue Devils (7-0) beat previously unbeaten Addison (7-1) 34-20. He had a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs, a 42-yard TD run and a 19-yard scoring pass.
Jermarcus Brown, Pickens County: Rushed for 271 yards and three touchdowns as the Tornadoes (8-0) beat Marion County 35-13.

Jalyn Martin, Collinsville: Rushed for 274 yards on 23 carries and scored three touchdowns (73, 68, 22 yards) in the Panthers' 43-28 win over Gaylesville. He also caught four passes for 82 yards.

Steven Shepherd, Foley: Rushed for 258 yards and three touchdowns, part of a 676-yard effort by the Lions, in a 65-34 win over Northview.

Gage Davis, Gaylesville: Carried 26 times for 247 yards and three TDs, ran for a two-point conversion and returned three kickoffs for 96 yards in a 43-28 loss to Collinsville. His TDs covered 14, 68 and 2 yards.
Marlon Oliver, Walker: The sophomore running back led Walker to a 28-21 win over Mortimer Jordan with 223 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 38 carries. His TDs covered 20, 3 and 23 yards.
Marcus Key, Bessemer City: Ran 17 times for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-6 win over Hueytown.

Gage Davis, Gaylesville: Rushed for 239 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns (14, 68 and 2 yards) and had a two-point conversion in the Trojans' 43-28 loss at Collinsville.
DeJuan Feagan, Pleasant Grove: Rushed for 236 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 168 yards and a score in a 64-25 win over Central-Tuscaloosa. Teammate Charles Buchanan added 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Otis Harris, Spain Park: Gained 229 yards rushing on 33 carries, with two touchdowns (7 and 5 yards) in a 34-13 win over Stanhope Elmore.

Zacc Weldon, G.W. Long: Rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries as Long broke away from a 20-20 first-quarter tie to win 61-20 over Houston County.

John Michael Dye, Vinemont: Had 27 carries and 202 rushing yards with one TD as the Eagles fell to Winfield 35-6. He also had three receptions for 13 yards.
Jordan Johnson, Vestavia Hills: Ran 18 times for 197 yards and three touchdowns (9, 66 and 13 yards) as the Rebels beat previously undefeated Shades Valley 41-14.

Brontae Harris, Hanceville: Rushed for 189 yards on 18 carries, including a 40-yard scoring scamper, in the Bulldogs’ 41-7 road win over Danville. The junior has piled on 741 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in the last four games. Teammate B.J. Smalls added 116 yards on just 11 carries with an 11-yard TD run.

Tyler Rogers, Mobile Christian: Rushed for 260 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in a 28-18 loss to Washington County. Rogers scored on runs of 64 and 5 yards and also caught a 36-yard TD pass from Jordan Aubrey. He also had a 49-yard kickoff return.

Dominique Jackson, T.R. Miller: Rushed for 271 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in T.R. Miller’s 42-7 win over Straughn. Jackson scored on runs of 73, 4 and 59 yards.

Dvonte Crandle, Alma Bryant: Rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries in the Hurricanes’ 59-40 victory over Murphy. Crandle scored on runs of 64, 39 and 2 yards as Alma Bryant piled up 465 total yards.

Herman McKenzie, Tallassee: While playing on an injured ankle, McKenzie had 233 yards rushing with touchdowns of 28 and 75 yards in a 49-17 win over St. James.

Dillon Miller, West Limestone: Rushed for 201 yards and five touchdowns (6, 8, 16, 5 and 20 yards) on 23 carries in a 47-33 win over Priceville.

Tez Spencer, Fairfield: Ran 17 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns (2, 6 and 90 yards), all in the first half of a 53-11 win over Paul Bryant.

Montago Morris, Carver: Rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns (78 and 2 yards) on 29 attempts in the Rams’ 23-20 win over Woodlawn.

Jordan Bentley, Guntersville: The sophomore running back rushed 27 times for 185 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-0 win over Locust Fork. His third TD of the night was his 26th of the season, breaking the Wildcats' single-season record of 25 set in 1995.

Trent Thrash, Fyffe: Ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns, including 164 in the first half, as the Red Devils clinched the Class 2A, Region 7 championship with a 47-28 win over North Sand Mountain. Thrash scored on runs of 67, 9 and 1 yards. 

Payne Anderson, Plainview: Rushed 15 times for 187 yards and one touchdown in a 39-6 victory over Sylvania.

Austin Harris, Fairview: Gained 160 rushing yards, scored twice and ran in the go-ahead, two-point conversion with less than a minute to play to lead the Aggies to a 43-42 home win over Sardis.

Brody White, Crossville: Rushed 17 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns and was 6-of-8 passing for 153 yards and two scores in a 35-19 win over Douglas. White ran 7 and 66 yards for TDs, and he threw scoring passes of 60 and 58 yards to Kyle Kilgo.

K.J. Harris, R.A. Hubbard: The eighth-grade running back ran for 188 yards on just five carries with three touchdowns (40, 53 and 92 yards) in the Chiefs' 46-6 win at Waterloo.


PASSING

Heath Burchfield, James Clemens: The sophomore quarterback set a school passing record with 418 yards passing in a 42-35 loss to Hazel Green. He was 21-of-38 with two touchdowns (72 and 65 yards) after passing for 398 yards versus Austin the week before. He is 138-of-229 this season with 1,979 passing yards and 15 touchdowns with just three interceptions.
Will Scott, Sardis: Was 27-of-40 passing for 366 yards and four touchdowns in the Lions' 43-42 loss to Fairview. His main target was receiver Brett Rains, who caught 15 passes for 218 yards and two scores.
Sebastien Findley, Good Hope: Piled up 395 yards total offense and accounted for all five touchdowns in a 35-7 win over Cordova. Findley was 16-of-24 passing for 267 yards and four scores and rushed for 136 yards and another TD as Good Hope rolled up 518 yards total offense.
Jacob Carroll, Mountain Brook: Accounted for four touchdowns and 399 yards total offense in the 31-7 win over Huffman. Carroll completed 20-of-27 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns (6, 63 and 24 yards) and ran 13 times for 50 yards with an 8-yard score.

Ko Powell, Oneonta: Was 14-of-16 passing for 282 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half, as the Redskins clinched the Class 4A, Region 6 title with a 65-6 win over St. Clair County. Terrell McDaniel added 10 first-half rush attempts for 127 yards and three TDs in the win.

Ramsey Rigby, Elba: The Tiger quarterback completed 15-of-17 passing for 297 yards and four touchdowns in Elba's 43-0 win over Calhoun. The TD passes covered 28, 17, 39 and 5 yards.

Matt Hagler, Slocomb: Accounted for 313 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-7 win over Daleville. Hagler completed 12-of-21 passes for 191 yards and two scores and rushed for 122 yards and two TDs on 24 carries.

Blake Bailey, Hewitt-Trussville: Completed 19-of-24 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns (41, 15 and 31 yards) in a 33-14 win over Gardendale.

Jase Trotter, Oakman: The quarterback had a hand in all four of the Wildcats' touchdowns in a 28-27 win over Aliceville. He completed 12-of-20 passes for 271 yards and two scores and added a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Tyler Glenn, Cullman: Was 26-of-40 for 250 passing yards and caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Auston Neal with 32 seconds remaining to cap a thrilling 16-13 home win over Athens. The senior was also an observer when Garrett Crider and Seth Donaldson connected on a 74-yard halfback pass for a score on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Jeremy Frye, Bob Jones: Completed 14-of-20 passes for 239 yards and four touchdowns (19, 6, 47 and 6 yards) as the Patriots beat Buckhorn 34-17 to claim their fifth straight Class 6A, Region 8 title.

Brody Meeks, Lynn: Completed 22-of-30 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-16 win over Parrish. His four TDs, all to receiver Ben Cagle, covered 15, 33, 5 and 10 yards. Meeks also rushed for 35 yards on nine carries with a 9-yard TD.
Jackson Fite, Decatur: Completed 12-of-17 passes for 230 yards and four TDs (38, 39, 32 and 15 yards) and ran three yards for another score in a 48-13 win over Sparkman.

Hayden Maples, Fairview: Threw for three touchdowns and 220 yards in the Aggies’ thrilling 43-42 win over Sardis.
Jack Hutcheson, Hoover: Completed 12-of-21 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns (7 and 55 yards) in just over a half of play in the Bucs’ 41-9 win over Minor.

Hayden Moore, Clay-Chalkville: The senior quarterback accounted for four touchdowns (7, 71 and 19 passing, and a 25-yard run) in the Cougars’ 38-21 win over Huntsville. He was 11-of 17 passing for 175 yards.

Nathan Harris, Gulf Shores: Ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more in the Dolphins’ 35-28 win over Williamson. The junior had 130 yards rushing on 22 carries and scored on runs of 6 and 11 yards. He also hit 7-of-11 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns covering 55 and 49 yards.

T.J. Lockett, Bibb County: Completed 9-of-11 passes for 137 yards and four touchdowns in a 46-21 win over West Blocton. He also scored on a 2-yard run.

 

PASS RECEIVING
Brett Rains,
Sardis: Caught 15 passes for 218 yards and two scores in a 43-42 loss to Fairview. Teammate Justin Hallmark had seven receptions for 125 yards.

Brock Latta, Oneonta:  The tight end had four receptions for 187 yards and three touchdowns in the first half of a 65-6 win over St. Clair County.
Ben Cagle, Lynn: Hauled in 14 receptions for 179 yards and four touchdowns as Lynn beat Parrish 38-16.
Jordan Bishop, Calera:
Hand had six catches for 137 yards and a TD and also added  a 77-yard touchdown run as the Eagles beat Oak Grove 55-0.

Brandon Herron, James Clemens: The sophomore caught three passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-35 loss to Hazel Green.
Deontre Muse, Oakman: Made five catches for 168 yards and had touchdown catches of 50 and 51 yards in the Wildcats' 28-27 win over Aliceville.
Andrew Schaper, Briarwood Christian: Grabbed six passes for 162 yards (27 yards per catch average), including a 38-yard touchdown reception in the 32-14 win over Ramsay.

Denard Spears, Piedmont: Caught 11 passes for 144 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown, in the Bulldogs' 40-15 loss at Saks.
Mason Jones, Cullman: Caught nine passes for 122 yards, including three for 52 yards on the game-winning drive, and intercepted Athens’ last-ditch pass attempt as time expired to help the Bearcats clinch a first-round playoff berth. Teammate Maison Goodwin also had 11 receptions for 106 yards.
Omari Williams, Parker: Grabbed five passes for 86 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown and kicked the eventual game-winning extra point while adding seven tackles and an interception on defense in the 7-6 win over Wenonah.

 

DEFENSE
Caleb Butler, Enterprise:
The defensive end had 18 tackles including one sack in the Wildcats’ 24-21 win over Robertsdale.
Colton Parton, Madison County: Recorded 18 tackles in a 42-6 win at Ardmore.

Bailey Strong, Fairview: Pulled down an interception in Sardis’ end zone in the final seconds to seal a 43-42 win for the Aggies.
Octaviuse Hardrick, Cottonwood: Recorded 16 tackles and had four receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns (28 and 51 yards) offensively as the Bears beat Samson 30-23. Teammate Kalan Coachman also had two interceptions, including one in the end zone in the game's final minute to preserve the win.

Chase Garrett, Sand Rock: Picked off a pair of passes and also rushed for a 25-yard touchdown in the Wildcats' 42-16 victory over West End.

Charles Phalo, Blount: Intercepted a pass and returned it 12 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of the Leopards’ 20-16 win at Theodore.

Shaun Dion Hamilton, Carver-Montgomery: Made 15 tackles, 4½ for losses, in a 41-7 win at Smiths Station as the Wolverines held the previously unbeaten Panthers 105 yards below its rushing average.

Garrett Daffron, Providence Christian: Made 17 tackles in a 28-6 win over Ariton.

Alex Cofer, Good Hope:  Had 13 tackles in the Raiders’ 35-7 win over Cordova.
Ben Ivey, Spring Garden: Returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the Panthers' 42-20 loss to Donoho.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Cade Stinnett, Enterprise:
Kicked a 29-yard field goal with three seconds left to give the Wildcats a 24-21 come-from-behind win over Robertsdale. The kick was set up five plays earlier on a blocked punt by Shaq Solomon and James Frarer. The game was tied with 6:09 left when Hunter Byrd returned a punt 65 yards for a TD.
Logan Campbell, Cold Springs: Finished with 307 total yards and five touchdowns — all in the first half — as the Eagles beat R.C. Hatch 54-30. The senior passed for 43 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 104 yards and another pair of scores, returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown, an interception 55 yards and a kickoff 55 yards.
Jamarius Leatherwood, Sipsey Valley: Scored on a 50-yard punt return, 68-yard pass and 47-yard run in a 56-22 win over Holt.
Isaac Albaradei, Tuscaloosa County: The freshman kicked three field goals, including an 18-yarder in overtime, in Tuscaloosa County’s 23-20 win over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.
