Straughn Posts 35-26 Champions Challenge Win
Straughn High School junior running back Daryl George scored three touchdowns and had another called back as the Tigers downed Walter Wellborn 35-26 in Game 2 of the 2013 AHSAA Champion Challenge preseason football tripleheader.
Bob Jones and Enterprise met in the final game Saturday night at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl.
George’s three touchdowns came in the first half, the first two on runs of 3 and 7 yards and the third on an 8-yard pass from quarterback Rollin Kinsaul. He also scored two two-point conversions. Kinsaul scored both second-half touchdowns for Straughn on two 1-yard sneaks in the final quarter.
Walter Wellborn took a 7-0 lead midway through the first period when quarterback Landon Machristie found Kevin Mixon behind the Straughn secondary and connected on a 77-yard touchdown pass. Dakota Gravitt then booted the extra point as the Panthers took a 7-0 lead with 5:50 left in the quarter.
Straughn stormed back quickly with George breaking around left end on a 58-yard run to the Wellborn 12-yard line. He was pulled down from behind by Chantz Goodman to prevent a touchdown. George got the touchdown four plays later, smashing off tackle from the 3. He also scored the 2-point conversion as Coach Trent Taylor’s team took an 8-7 lead.
The Tigers took the lead early in the second quarter when George scored on a 7-yard run, capping a 64-yard, 10-play drive. Wellborn didn’t trail for long, however. Devron Taylor took the ensuing kickoff at the 14-yard line and raced 86 yards for a touchdown. Gravitt’s extra point made it 14-8 with 9:03 left in the half.
Straughn got the lead again right before the half when George hauled in Kinsaul’s TD pass. His two-point conversion gave the Tigers a 22-14 lead at intermission.
Corri Tignor caught a 34-yard TD pass from Machristie just 48 seconds into the second half to cut the lead to 22-20. Mixon scored his second TD on a 21-yard pass from Machristie with 8:33 to play for the Panthers to cut the Straughn lead to 28-26. The two-point try pass fell incomplete and Coach Jeff Smith’s team could get no closer.
