PELHAM – St. Stansilaus senior Daniel Grieves went on a scoring spree in the second half and sparked Mississippi to a come-from-behind 85-74 victory over the Alabama All-Stars in the 21st annual Alabama-Mississippi Basketball All-Star Classic here at Pelham Civic Complex Friday night. It gave Mississippi a sweep for the second straight year.
The 6-foot-6 Air Force Academy signee led all scorers with 21 points – 11 coming in a four-minute span that turned a 52-45 deficit into a 64-62 lead. Grieves was 4-of-4 on 3-pointers in that stretch.   He finished 5-of-9 from the 3-point line but missed his final three attempts after the damage had been done. He also handed out four assists, including a spectacular behind-the-back pass to teammate Jarvis Summer of Provine that led to a powerful dunk.
Alabama MVP Ricky Tarrant of Pleasant Grove had 15 points. He was 7-of-8 at the foul line and also had a team-high three assists. Charles Eaton of Selma added 16 points and REggie Spencer of Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Alabama, coached by Hillcrest’s Scott Suttles and Pickens County’s Russ Wallace, stayed closed despite a height disadvantage that was magnified by the absence of William Truss, the 6-8 Vestavia Hills center who did not get to play after aggravating an old injury Thursday.
Alabama won the rebound battle 49-46. Roquez Johnson of Carver-Montgomery, who scored nine points, cleared five rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots.
Mississippi also got 15 points from Deville Smith of Calloway and 11 from Vicksburg’s Mychal Ammons and now leads the series 11-10. The Classic began in 1991 with the first 10 played on a rotating basis in Florence at the University of North Alabama and near Jackson, MS, at Hinds Junior College.

Alabama’s All-Stars, coached by R.A. Hubbard’s Nicholas Vinson and Madison Academy’s Brian Privett, led 30-25 at the half, thanks in part to a strong inside presence of Central-Phenix City post players Monique Jackson and Kristi Mokube.
